Top-seeded Rafael Nadal is attempting to win his fourth major tennis title in a row — the “Rafa Slam” — at the Australian Open this month.
Standing in the way of Nadal, who is seeking to become the first man to hold all four major titles since Rod Laver in 1969, is a name Florida tennis fans would recognize, Ryan Sweeting.
Sweeting, a qualifier in his first Australian Open, beat Daniel Gimeno 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round.
Nadal and Sweeting, ranked No. 116, will play in the second round Wednesday.
Sweeting played at UF in 2006 before turning pro in 2007. He is 12-16 as a pro, with $478,565 in earnings.
