Welcome to the Sports Desk
From The Sports Desk makes its debut today. It will contain news and notes from the sports world, and will include more than just University of Florida athletic items.
Our copy editors will contribute to it, so you will get plenty of information from knowledgeable journalists in touch with the latest sports news.
Please interact with us with questions about how and why we do what we do at The Sun, on Gatorsports.com and Gainesville.com, or join in any debate with your opinions.
Something else to look for, this Friday we’ll introduce the SEC’s 25 Best, a 25-part daily series that counts down the best football players in the SEC heading into the 2009 season. To go along with that we’ll also count down the teams in the Gatorsports.com’s annual preseason college football poll.

How much does Charleston Southern get paid to come into the Swamp and play the Gators? Is this a big portion of their football budget?
GO GATORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jack: Thanks for reading.
Charleston Southern is getting paid $450,000 from Florida’s UAA for the Sept. 5 scrimmage.
Troy, which visits Sept. 12, will be paid $500,000. Hey, it pays to have played in a bowl game the previous season.
And Florida International, a Nov. 21 visitor, will receive $425,000.
The money is a big part of a small school’s athletic budget.

Excellent site, keep up the good work

So, essentially in other words, Florida pays to play/scrimmage a Division 1 FBS and FCS team so they can fluff player stats as well as the win column. You and Florida call is supporting “a small school’s athletic budget.”
That sounds like $1,375,000 in Fluff dollars to me, not to include Network royalties.

I hope the Gators can play with emotion that matches what they will see from Cincy in the Sugar Bowl.
The Bearcats have their undefeated season, representation of a Big East conference that they(not me!) feel is very un-recognized, making a statement to their former coach(much like WVU did to RichRod when the ‘Eers drubbed a good Sooner team. That kind of emotion is dangerous.
I hope that the Gators will meet that mind-set vs a fired up and talented Cincy team.
What kinda pulse are you getting on the Gators right now?
I’d think(and hope!) that seniors like Timmy T, Spikes and crew would lay it on the line and end the senior season as a reflection of the stellar time that they have given us during their stay in the swamp.
What kind of effort and focus do you expect from the Gators in the Sugar Bowl?
Thanx guys, love your site,
