Former NFL QB joining UF football program

Former NFL quarterback Charlie Frye is joining Florida’s football program. Frye has been hired to assist the Gators with player development and mental conditioning, according to sources. One source said he’ll start out as a consultant. A third-round pick in the 2005 NFL draft, Frye played six seasons in the NFL with the Browns, Seahawks and Raiders before injuries ended his pro career early. It didn’t take long for Florida coach Jim McElwain to get his wish. All but two members of Florida’s 2015 football recruiting class are now listed on the official roster. Camrin Knight, one of three players who didn’t arrive with the incoming freshmen last week, reported to campus Sunday. D’Anfernee McGriff and Keivonnis Davis have yet to enroll at UF. McElwain donates $5K to help former player

Last week Florida coach Jim McElwain generously helped one of his former Colorado State players. According to the Coloradoan, ex-Rams defensive lineman Eli Edwards lost his wife, Isa, on June 6 after a battle with lupus. Since then, Edwards and the couple’s daughter have been unable to afford a flight back to the United States from New Zealand, where his wife was receiving treatment. CSU using McElwain buyout to fund athlete stipends

Colorado State can thank Jim McElwain for more than reviving its football program. The school will use the $7 million buyout from Florida and McElwain to start providing cost-of-attendance stipends for student-athletes on scholarship, according to a report Wednesday from the Coloradoan. The stipends, which start at CSU this fall and will be funded by McElwain’s buyout for the next three to five years, give in-state scholarship athletes an extra $2,400 per year, and out-of-state athletes $3,100 more per year.… Read More »

After leading Florida’s basketball program on an unprecedented 19-year run, Billy Donovan left the Gators on Thursday to coach the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder. Two of Urban Meyer’s best players from his coaching days at Florida were in the news this month. One got new life in the NFL, another got life in prison. Former Heisman Tropher winner Tim Tebow signed with the Philadelphia Eagles last week, while ex-Gators tight end Aaron Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder on April 15 and received a mandatory life sentence. Former Gators react to Hernandez verdict

Former New England Patriots tight end and Florida Gators standout Aaron Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder Wednesday in the 2013 shooting death of Odin Lloyd.
